Run-Flat Tyres Explained: Are They Actually Worth It?

Run-flat tyres promise peace of mind — but they come with real trade-offs. Here's a balanced look at whether they're right for you.

How Run-Flat Tyres Work

Run-flat tyres (also called Zero Pressure or SST tyres) feature reinforced sidewalls stiff enough to support the vehicle's weight even when the tyre is completely deflated. This allows you to continue driving at up to 50 mph for a maximum of approximately 50 miles after a puncture — enough to reach a tyre centre or safe stopping point without being stranded. Most cars fitted with run-flats from the factory (commonly BMWs, Minis, and Mercedes-Benz models) also come without a spare wheel, relying entirely on the run-flat capability. They can only be used on vehicles fitted with a TPMS to alert the driver to pressure loss, since the reinforced sidewall means you may not feel the difference when driving.

The Drawbacks of Run-Flat Tyres

Run-flat tyres come with genuine compromises. They typically cannot be repaired after a puncture — the sidewall stress from driving on zero pressure usually means replacement is the only safe option. They cost significantly more than standard tyres — often 30-50% more. The stiffened sidewall results in a noticeably harsher ride, particularly on Bradford's pothole-affected roads. And because they're less common in mobile tyre fitter stock, availability can be limited for less common sizes. That said, Motorway Mobile Tyres stocks a comprehensive range of run-flat tyres for Bradford and West Yorkshire customers and can supply popular BMW and Mini run-flat sizes with excellent response times.

Should Bradford Drivers Choose Run-Flats?

If your car already uses run-flats as OEM fitment, we generally recommend continuing with them — switching to standard tyres on a vehicle designed around run-flats can affect handling and requires fitting a spare wheel solution. If you're buying new tyres for a vehicle that can take either type, the decision comes down to priorities: run-flats suit drivers who prioritise not being stranded and who do regular longer-distance journeys. Standard tyres with a proper spare or emergency kit may suit Bradford urban commuters better, offering a more comfortable ride and lower replacement cost. Our Bradford team is always happy to discuss the right choice for your vehicle and lifestyle.
