A tyre blowout at speed is terrifying — but knowing exactly what to do can be the difference between safety and catastrophe.

The First Five Seconds: Don't Panic and Don't Brake Hard

A sudden tyre blowout at speed produces a dramatic bang, a rapid pull to the side of the blown tyre, and a loud flapping sound. Every instinct screams to hit the brakes — resist that instinct. Hard braking with a blown tyre dramatically increases the risk of losing control. Instead: keep a firm grip on the wheel with both hands, look ahead and steer straight, maintain or gently accelerate very briefly to stabilise the vehicle's direction, then gradually ease off the accelerator. The vehicle will naturally slow as rolling resistance increases on the flat tyre. Do not apply the brakes until your speed has reduced significantly, ideally to under 30 mph.

Getting to Safety on Bradford Roads

On the M606 or M62 near Bradford, activate your hazard lights immediately and steer gradually towards the hard shoulder. Do not stop in a live lane; a stationary vehicle in a motorway lane is an extreme danger to you and others. On Bradford's dual carriageways and A-roads, look for the nearest layby, petrol station, or safe side road. Once stopped, apply the handbrake, switch on hazard lights, and if it's safe to exit the vehicle on the opposite side from traffic, do so and stand well behind the barrier or armco. Place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind the vehicle if you have one and it's safe to do so.

After the Blowout: Calling Motorway Mobile Tyres

A blowout tyre cannot be repaired and requires immediate replacement. Call Motorway Mobile Tyres Bradford immediately — 24/7 — with your exact location (motorway number, junction reference, or nearest signpost). If you're on the M606 or M62 near Bradford, also consider calling Highways England (0300 123 5000) to alert them to your position. Our Bradford-based emergency team responds to motorway blowouts rapidly. Give the operator your vehicle registration, make, and model for tyre size pre-planning. Do not attempt to change the tyre yourself on a motorway hard shoulder — it's illegal and extremely dangerous. Our mobile team will come to you.
